Case study 17: Completely remove database
  • Platform: HP-UNIX 11, Tru64 , Windows
  • Sybase ASE version: 12.5.x
  • Background story: People who are relatively new in Sybase ASE administration, often forget to delete device file from disk, when they delete database.
  • Task: Describe database deletion procedure.
  • Solution: There are three steps which have to be performed in order to completely delete database. When I said "completely" I think about getting to state which was before database creation. These steps are:

    1. delete database from Sybase.
    2. delete devices on which database have been created, if there are no other databases on these devices. If You try to delete device on which database exists, Sybase will report an error.
    3. physically remove device files from disk. This step is often forgotten. Device deletion from Sybase do not physically remove device files.
